ABOUT US
A World Where Every Neurodivergent Individual Feels Empowered
We are Neurodiverse Sport CIC, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2022 by former Olympic rower Caragh McMurtry and elite cyclist Mikey Mottram. We are on a mission to transform the sports sector into a space where neurodivergent athletes and participants can engage, compete, and thrive with confidence. Inspired by our own journeys from grassroots to elite sports, Caragh, Mikey and the growing Neurodiverse Sport team envision a world where every neurodivergent individual feels empowered and fully supported, whether in mainstream or specialised sports, and at every level.
The Power of Storytelling and Lived Experience
Our commitment goes beyond inclusion; we aim to reshape sports environments so neurodivergent individuals can thrive without needing to mask or compromise their unique needs. Through education, advocacy, and insights from lived experiences, Neurodiverse Sport highlights neurodivergent strengths while addressing the specific challenges individuals may encounter. With expert guidance and a deep understanding, we champion well-being and equitable participation, ensuring neurodivergent individuals are recognised, celebrated, and fully supported.
Across our work and social platforms, we share stories of neurodivergent success in sport to inspire teams, clubs, and organisations to create more inclusive spaces, while reaching those who feel most marginalised and underrepresented. Given the lower rates of neurodivergent participation in sports—and the significant potential benefits—it’s essential that sports become accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding for everyone. Our vision for Neurodiverse Sport is for neuroinclusive practices to become the norm across all sports, and we are dedicated to making this a reality.
Founding Neurodiverse Sport
“Sport has given me some of the most incredible highs and devastating lows of my life..
-
As a junior and U23 athlete, I found immense pride and purpose in rowing, with early successes fuelling my dreams. But as I progressed to the national team, I began to struggle deeply, feeling like I couldn’t quite fit in, even as I worked harder and pushed myself further. At the time, I was navigating a lot of confusion and frustration. I was misdiagnosed and spent years feeling lost, trying to understand why I faced certain challenges that seemed invisible to others. Eventually, I received a re-diagnosis as autistic, which helped me start to piece things together and, over time, allowed me to reclaim my sense of self and reconnect with my love for the sport.
This journey has driven me to ensure that neurodivergent people can experience the transformative power of sports in ways that honour who they truly are. I want others to be able to participate and compete equitably, without feeling the pressure to mask or hide their needs as I once did. Sport is not only about winning or physical achievement; it’s a way to discover resilience, joy, and self-worth. I’m determined to help build pathways and environments that embrace neurodivergent athletes, allowing them to thrive, discover themselves, and enjoy all the benefits that sport has to offer.”
“Sport and exercise is how I self-manage. I don’t know what I would do without it..
-
For me, sport and exercise are essential for managing my energy and focus. When I don’t exercise, it’s like something is off—I feel restless, unable to sit still or concentrate on anything. Through sport, I’ve learned a lot about how my brain works and what it needs to function well. Growing up, I didn’t have this understanding. At school, I was given labels early on, and I thought I was just “stupid” or “different.” I struggled because I didn’t know that my brain simply needed a different approach and a way to channel all that energy. Sport gave me that outlet and the insight into how to work with my mind, not against it.
Now, I’ve taken what I’ve learned and am applying it in all areas of my life. I know what it takes to get my brain in gear, and that understanding has made such a difference. I’m not only training and competing but also studying to become an accountant and co-running two businesses, including Neurodiverse Sport CIC. It’s incredible to think of how far I’ve come from those days in school where I felt lost and limited. I’m passionate about helping other neurodivergent people access the same benefits that sport has given me—self-discovery, confidence, and the tools to thrive.”
Succuss is Winning Your Own Race
For us, success isn’t just about winning medals and accolades; it’s also about the small but powerful victories, like simply putting one foot in front of the other. After all, both achievements are equally inspiring when accomplished through adversity—because, in truth, each of us faces unique challenges in life.
